Step 1
Some dogs will be eager to take a pill just by you putting it on the floor and saying "go get it". My dog, with hypothyroidism did just that. Lucky me, until I came across one who was not so cooperative. These ideas can help you give that dog a pill.
-
Step 2
1. A cover up, in a small amount of butter makes it seem like a good thing to eat out of your hand.
2. Chopping it up and placing in a tablespoon of tuna water smells nothing like a pill.
3. Waiting until you give your dog moist dog food can allow you to mix it right in there along with the chunks. Make sure you examine the bowl to see that the pill was not taken and then spit out afterwards. Dogs can be sneaky, smart companions.
4. If your dog treats are soft, embed the pill in the treat and give it that way. -
Step 3
If step one did not work, you went to step two. Now you are on step three which means plan A and plan B were ineffective in administering the pill to your dog.
1. Confine the dog or have someone hold him on their lap or with a leash if possible.
2. Put a little butter or oil on pill. Hold the pill in one hand and with the other tip the head back.
3. With the hand that you are holding the head with, quickly and gently press with thumb and forefinger behind the opening of the mouth to get it open.
4. Insert pill on the back of the tongue
5. close the mouth
6. Massage the throat to induce swallowing
