There are many different designs that are out there when it comes to bedroom furniture. In this article, we will use rustic wood framed furniture with the log cabin feel and nostalgia. This example will include how to make a bed frame with posts.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Log Wizard (log tool), a good wood glue, and 2 inch sheet-rock screws. A high powered drill either cordless or with cord. 4 7ft. lengths of 5 inch diameter pine logs, 4 5ft lengths of pine logs, and 4
  1. Step 1

You will need 4 posts that are 5 inches in diameter. Using the Log Wizard tool, you will drill out one hole in each log approximately 12 inches from the bottom of each log. These will be the holes that will accept the other log rails. On the same posts, you will also drill holes that will face each other. These holes will accept the 5 ft. logs that will hold the posts together at each end of the bed. There will be a hole 12 inches from the bottom, and a hole 4 inches from the top on each post.

  2. Step 2

Using the Log wizard tool, route the ends so that they form a sort of cone shape; these ends will insert into the holes you drilled into the bed posts. Do this to all 4 7ft lengths. For the 5 ft lengths that will intersect the post, use the Log Wizard to route the ends as well.

  3. Step 3

For the bed posts, put a dab of glue in the holes facing inward where the logs will hold the posts together. Insert the 2, 5 ft lengths into the holes on the first post. At the closed end of the posts, drill a screw through to hold the logs in place. Once this is done, attach the other post on to the end of the protruding logs to form a head board. Repeat with screws to hold in place. Repeat this whole step to complete the opposite head board for the other end.

  4. Step 4

Using the 4 7ft. lengths, insert two of them into the holes that were drilled 12 inches from the bottom, using wood glue and screws to fasten them tight. Then attach both of the head boards connecting them with these rails, making sure to glue and screw to fasten.

  5. Step 5

With the remaining 7 ft. lengths, measure out a foot from each side rail and use this as a guide to drill two more holes at each end in the head board rails to accept the routed ends of the 7 ft. lengths. This will make the frame rigid and strong, and will prevent the bed from sagging in the middle. Glue and screw all connections.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to use good wood glue such as Elmers Wood Glue, or Gorilla Glue. The screws are just to get a good connection for the glue to bond.
