Reduce Heat from Windows
Reduce Heat from Windows

Much of the heat coming into your home comes from the windows, especially if you only have single paned windows. This is particularly a problem during the summer. See the steps below for easy ways to reduce the heat coming into your home through your windows.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Seal Up Any Gaps

Make sure your windows have been caulked an there are no air leaks. They should have a tight seal.

  2. Step 2

    Plant a Tree

Planting trees creates shade. Make sure to plant the tree not too close to your home that it will damage your foundation. See the link below for more ways to save money by planting a tree.

  3. Step 3

    Add an Awning

Awnings, like trees, create shade on your windows and can reduce the outside temperature by your windows by as much as 15 degrees. You can use fabric awnings, wood awnings, metal awnings, or any other awning you can thing of.

  4. Step 4

    Add Solar Screens

Solar screens are dark colored screens that attach to the exterior of your windows. They keep much of the sun out, however it alters the look of the exterior of your home.

  5. Step 5

    Add Window Tinting Film

Window tinting film is added to the inside of your windows. It is very effective at keeping the heat out of your home in order to reduce your air conditioning bill as well as make your home more comfortable. You can install the film yourself, or you can hire a company to install the window film. I have installed window film and it is very challenging to get it installed perfectly. If you have a small window, I would suggest attempting to install the film yourself. You can purchase the film and supplies at major home improvement stores. If you have a medium or large window, I would suggest hiring a company to install the film for you. The film comes in many different shades and colors.

on 3/18/2009 I will definitely be checking in to some solar screens to reduce the heat from our windows. We live in inland So Cal, and our little old house (built in 1949) has 31 original windows. We've already caulked and planted trees, but it still gets hot. Thanks so much.

on 3/10/2009 I use black vinyl shades to keep the sun out. I have a huge tree, too. Good suggestions for reducing radiant heat transfer.
