You can completely change the appearance of your home.

Shabby chic is a type of interior design that you can use in your own home. The philosophy behind shabby chic is that you can have aged, antique or even dilapidated looking décor in your kitchen and dining room while still retaining a chic and stylish appearance. This gives your kitchen and dining room decor the feeling of a cozy, old cottage, cabin in the woods or beach house even if your home was just built. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Hit the thrift stores. Thrift stores are a great place to find aged, worn furniture for your kitchen and dining room, such as a table, chairs or cabinets.

    • 2

Paint new furniture white or tan. Once the paint dries, use sandpaper, metal objects or anything else with a rough surface to scrape over the paint and chip away just enough to make it look worn out. You can also paint your furniture with a crackle paint that creates a worn look when it dries.

    • 3

Opt for softer colors, such as off white, pale pink or a soft blue to create the shabby chic look in your kitchen and dining room. Some places to apply colors include the curtains, tablecloths or paint colors. By only utilizing soft colors, you can get away with not matching colors because there will still be a consistent tone in the room.

    • 4

Add floral patterns to the design of the dining room and kitchen. The fabrics you choose should have soft colors and subtle floral prints. For example, curtains or table linens that have a floral pattern can be purchased and placed near actual flowers. Fabrics that look aged are even better for the shabby chic look.

    • 5

Place a large area rug under your dining room table. The rug should incorporate the same soft shades you've been using so far.

    • 6

Accessorize your kitchen and dining room with vintage looking accents, such as floral plates, pictures and vases. A vintage chandelier is also a great accessory to add to a shabby chic décor, especially if it has a grand, weaving design, as opposed to a more functional modern design.
