Choose A Breast Pump
Choose A Breast Pump

Breastfeeding is such a wonderful time for both mom and baby. But what happens when it is time for you to go back to work? If you know that you will be returning to work during the time that you want to continue with breastfeeding you may want to rent (check with your health insurance) or purchase a breast pump. Having a breast pump handy is always a good idea even if you don't plan on using it.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

If you know that you are only going to be using the breast pump short term, renting one would probably work best for you. It is more cost efficient(your health insurance may pay for it) and unless you are having more babies later on there is not much point in spending all that money for a month or two. If you qualify for the WIC program talk to them about their breast pumps. They often will have one available for use at no cost(see if they have a Philips Avent brand available). Or if you are in need of a breast pump while waiting for a premature baby to be able to nurse the hospital where your baby is may have a pump you can use at no cost. Now a days many insurance companies will pay for the rental of a breast pump for short term use.

  2. Step 2

If you are going to be using the breast pump for a longer period first check with your insurance and see if they will pay a portion of the purchase cost. You will also want to decide which one will best fit your needs. Using a pump with two tubes and kits will help to cut the pumping time in half and you will be able to do both breasts at the same time. This may work well if you are pumping at work. You won't need to pump as often. There are pumps with automatic cycling and quick cycling. These don't require you holding a button and they have a faster cycling time so your breast will empty faster. If your breasts are unusually sensitive or tender you may want a pump that allows you to adjust the suction level.

  3. Step 3

Breastfeeding is natural and it is healthy for both you and your baby. Try to, no matter what, breastfeed your baby as long as possible.
