1
Update your operating system and Web browser regularly. Windows has an automatic update component that updates itself and Internet Explorer. The Firefox and Safari browsers update automatically as well. When you are prompted to download an important update, do not put it off; numerous operating system and browser updates resolve security issues that have been discovered.
-
2
Run anti-virus or Internet security software at all times. Windows includes anti-malware software, Windows Defender, and Microsoft provides an anti-virus product called Microsoft Security Essentials that you can download for free. Consider testing other anti-virus products such as AVG and Avast!. Security software can recognize several types of threats online and prevent your computer from downloading them.
-
3
Avoid questionable content while browsing the Web. For example, websites hosting illegal or pornographic content may contain malware that could harm your computer.
-
4
Avoid downloading and installing free software unless you are sure that the source is safe. A free program with numerous positive reviews on prominent websites is probably safe to install. If you are unable to find any information online about a given program, avoid installing it and look for another program that performs the same function.

5
Forgo clicking on links in emails, even if you know the sender and the link seems reasonable. A phishing website is disguised to look like a major website such as PayPal, but it actually tricks people into giving up access to passwords and other data.
-
6
Monitor your children when they use the Internet. Predators use social networking websites and chat networks to lure children into inappropriate situations. Your child may not always be completely honest about who she is talking to online.
-
7
Exercise caution when buying products online, and purchase only from retailers with solid track records and return policies that you are comfortable with. A classified ad website may be a good way to save money by buying a secondhand item from someone who lives locally. If you respond to a classified ad, do not deal with anyone who is not willing to meet face-to-face.
