Step 1
The first decision you must make is what size aquarium you would like to have. In general, the larger the saltwater aquarium, the more stable the water parameters become. However, experienced hobbyist are now successfully creating nano tanks as small as five gallons or less.
-
Step 2
Choose a size that fits your home and lifestyle. Remember, the larger the aquarium, the larger the cost. Not only in the initial aquarium purchase, but also the maintenance and monthly cost. Choose a decorative stand that complements your aquarium nicely. Remember, the stand will be a major focal point of your aquarium as well.
-
Step 3
Make sure your aquarium comes with a built in overflow system. This is how you connect your sump to your aquarium, and is basically two to four holes cut into the bottom of the tank. It is surround usually by a piece of black plastic with vertical groves cut into it to allow water to flow. IMO, this should be a must in any saltwater tank you setup.
-
Step 4
Choose a tank that is 18 inches to 24 inches in width if possible. 13 inch width tanks are very hard to aquascape nicely, and by far the majority of saltwater hobbyist that purchase them (i.e. 55g) turn around and purchase a larger tank in a short amount of time.
-
Step 5
Stay away from tanks that are over 24 inches in height. Rarely does any saltwater fish or coral require such height. Aquariums over 24" are very difficult to clean (try reaching the bottom) and properly light for high intensity corals.
-
Step 6
There are many different style aquariums now including standard, corner, bow and half-circle tanks. All can work well depending on the style you like. Get creative and have fun! The world of saltwater is awaiting!
