Tire Chains

Tire chains are a must when winter conditions are un-drivable and you have to be out on the roads. Tire chains are used by emergency personnel and the average driver in extreme weather conditions.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tire chains or
  • Tire cables
  • Insulated gloves
  • Flat surface
  1. Step 1

If possible, drive your vehicle onto a flat surface to install the tire chains. Remember, tire chains are to keep you from getting stuck, not to free your vehicle after your already stranded. Check your local laws and regulations regarding tire chains. They are illegal in some areas unless you are driving an emergency vehicle.

  2. Step 2

Next, you will want to install the tire chains on the drive wheels. This will be either the front or back depending on your type of vehicle. Unfold the chain and lay flat it in front of the tire. Do the same for the next tire.

  3. Step 3

Now you will want to start the car and slowly pull it forward until your tires on in the center of the chains. Turn the car off and apply the emergency brake.

  4. Step 4

Wearing warm gloves you are going to pull both ends of the tire chains up to the top of the tire. Both ends should meet at the top of the tire and you will attach them with whatever mechanism they are made with for attaching. Some include hooks or latches for this. Fasten both tires in this way.

  5. Step 5

Check the chains for looseness. Tire chains are made to specific tire sizes and are normally not one size fits all. It the chains are too loose they will fall off when you are driving and are probably not made for your tire size.
