Step 1
The main components of a great statement of purpose (or letter of intent) are why you want to pursue graduate studies, what you hope to do with your education when you finish, why you are a great fit with the program, and what in particular about this program made you apply.
Though there is some overlap among components, the last one is important. For each school you apply to, you should come up with specific reasons why this is a school you want to attend. It can be certain professors, classes, or a specialized program the school offers. Make the letter sound unique to the particular graduate school. -
Step 2
What classes or experiences in your undergrad influenced your decision to go to grad school? Don't be afraid to mention that you value the increased job opportunities that come with graduate education. In many fields, professional positions are only open to Masters and PhD holders. Explain in your letter of intent why you would like one of these jobs.

Step 3
What area of research are you currently interested in? If you completed or are working on an undergrad thesis, summarize the results.

Step 4
Some grad school applicants may have bad grades or low test scores they are ashamed of. If you can, explain the factors that led to the poor grades and GRE or TOEFL scores and what you have done to improve since then.
Examples, you may have low freshman year grades due to stress or irresponsibility, but since then you have straightened up. Your GRE scores may have been low due to not being fluent in English, but you have studied English more since then. -
Step 5
YOu should plan your statement of purpose well in advance of applying and make sure to proof read carefully before sending it out.
