How to Paint Terra Cotta Pots with Decorative Letters and Images

Spruce up those drab terra cotta planter pots. Paint them colors to match the plants blooming in them, to coordinate with your patio decor or to spell out words for a festive touch to your next party. Small annuals potted in painted pots is also a great party favor idea for you next garden party.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Terra Cotta Pots
  • Acrylic Paints
  • Paint Brushes
  • Masking Tape
  • Computer
  • Printer
  • Paper
  • Transfer Paper
  • Scissors
  1. Step 1

    Sketch a design on paper or draw one on your computer. You can also search online for a simple design to print. You can also print one letter at a time to paint onto each pot when spelling out a word.

  2. Step 2

    Cut the shape, letter or image you want to paint on the pot. Leave a one inch border around the item. Cut a piece of transfer paper to the same size.

  3. Step 3

    Use the masking tape to tape the piece of transfer paper to the pot where you want the design placed. Then tape the design on top of the transfer paper.

  4. Step 4

    Use a pencil to outline the image and transfer it on the pot.

  5. Step 5

    Remove the tape, transfer paper and paper from the pot.

  6. Step 6

    Use the acrylic paint and paint brush to fill in the letter or design. Alternately, you can paint the rest of the pot and leave the design, exposing the terra cotta.

Tips & Warnings
  • To save ink, just print an outline of your design or letter.
