Step 1
The best cure is prevention. Groom your pet regularly. Get your dog's hair cut once every 6-8 weeks and brush it to pick up loose hair before it makes its way into your carpet.
-
Step 2
Vacuum regularly. It may not get all the hair, and it may be hard for tight corners, but its the right place to start. Depending on how much your pet sheds, vacuum once a week at least, and more if need be. Use a hose attachment for tight corners to make sure the hair isn't piling up in hard to reach places. Make sure you keep the vacuum obstruction free by emptying the bag and cleaning it out periodically. You may need to empty it after each use if your pet sheds a lot.

Step 3
Sweepa rubber broomTry a rubber broom. Amazon.com sells a Sweepa rubber broom that works by creating a static charge to pick up hair, and is very effective. Try using this tool after vacuming to get the stubborn hair.
-
Step 4
If you have a small spot with pet hair, use a sticky tape lint roller to pick it up. These are generally used to get lint off clothes, and can be found anywhere.

on 4/9/2009 To get dog hair out of the carpet, I also clean once a month with a steam-cleaner. It picks up gobs of hair that has worked its way down. 5*
