There are many different types of wine available and selecting the perfect wine can be fun and challenging. Some wines go best with certain types of food, such as red meat or chicken. Some wines are recommended for dessert while some are best enjoyed alone. This article will help you learn how to choose a wine.

  • Wine
  • Wine Glasses
  1. Step 1

Decide on what, if anything you plan to have along with the wine. If you are having a chicken, turkey or fish based dinner, you will probably want to choose a white wine, such as a nice Chardonnay. Choose a nice red wine, such as a Merlot to accompany a pasta, steak or wild game meal. Narrowing down the meal, if any, will help you narrow down the type of wine that you should choose. This is one method of choosing a wine.

  2. Step 2

Are you looking for something versatile to keep on hand? Choose a simple rose wine, such as Zinfandel to drink alone or with a meal, which is versatile enough to serve any time you would like it. It's light and sweet and blends nicely with any occasion.

  3. Step 3

Attend a wine tasting; this is a great opportunity to sample many different wines at a low price (or free) without having to commit to purchasing an entire bottle of something that you have always wanted to taste but may not like. Wineries often hold wine tastings to sell wine; and once you find one that you enjoy, be sure to pick up a bottle before you leave.

  4. Step 4

When in doubt, ask your company if they have a wine preference. Some people prefer certain types of wines over others, and some people dislike certain wines all together. Asking for the opinions of your guests is a surefire way to avoid disappointment.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are a beginner, stay away from wines that are full bodied or woodsy; you may find their taste overpowering.
