Things You'll Need:
- either a gas powered auger, or a set of post hole diggers, and a round tip shovel.
- 4in.x4in. posts(or as needed for app.)
- 8ft.Lx1in.Tx6in. boards(or as needed for app.)
- 1 box of 16 penny nails
- 1 (or more) 20oz. claw hammer.
- 1 tamp bar
- 2-3 bags of Quikrete(depending on app.)
-
Step 1
Dig your holes exactly 8ft.,to the center of each hole apart.
-
Step 2
Depending on your needs, as well as the lay of the land on which the fence will be built, you will determine what size lumber that you will need. A standard application would call for some 8ft.Lx4in.Wx4in.W posts, spaced to 8ft. "centers", as well as some 8ft.Lx6in.Wx1in.T boards for your cross pieces.
-
Step 3
Going one at a time place a post into a hole. Start to fill the hole in with the dirt that came out of it, being sure to tamp it well every 3in. or so, when it's mostly full pour 2/3 bag of the Quikrete in, add 1/2 gal. of water, and finish covering up with remainder of dirt. Being sure to keep post level, and centered in the hole at all times. Repeat until all posts are set.
-
Step 4
Step 4 will go a lot faster with a little help from a friendly neighbor or family member, but if it's just you, then... start with 1 of the 8ft. boards on the outside edge of the first post, and center the board
on the 2nd post. Place 3 nails in each end of the board. Repeat until you have a satisfactory fence.
