Things You'll Need:
- Screwdrivers
- Voltage tester
- new switch
-
Step 1
DimmersFirst always turn the power off at breaker, or fuse box before working with any type of electrical project.Remove the cover plate from the switch box.If your not sure if the power is off try and turn the light on, or use a voltage tester to make sure the power is turned off before proceeding.Trying to wire a dimmer switch on a live circuit will result in a blown dimmer switch.
-
Step 2
Switch boxRemove the old switch from the wall with a screwdriver or drill. Pull switch from box and loosen the two screws on the switch that are holding the wires. There should only be two black wires and a ground attached to the switch. One black wire will be the power wire and the other wire will be the common going to the light. That is a switch leg wiring configuration.
-
Step 3
Wrap one black wire around each screw and tighten screws snugly. Make sure to always attach the ground wire when possible. Some switches already have wires coming out of them,if so just wire nut each wire together.
-
Step 4
switch coversPush the wires back inside the switch box carefully not to smash or cross wires. Screw the switch into the wall. With the switch in the off position. Restore power at the breaker box. Carefully turn switch on to check for proper operation. Replace the switch cover.
