Save Money on Hair Care

The economic times getting your hair down? There are easy ways to cut expensive corners without losing any of your signature style!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Shampoo Every OTHER Day. You don't need to shampoo every single day; it may actually be damaging and drying your hair. Skip the second day and sleep in instead!

  2. Step 2

Skip the Smoother. Do you buy expensive smoothing cremes and glossers and leave in conditioners? If you're looking for sleek, glossy, no-flyaway locks, when you're finished styling, spray cheap hairspray on a paddle brush and brush through your hair. It will be smooth, sleek, and styled for a fraction of the cost.

  3. Step 3

Reality Check Your Amounts. You only need a quarter sized amount of shampoo and conditioner, a tiny bit more conditioner for very long hair. Don't run your shampoo bottle out faster than necessary!

  4. Step 4

Buy Bulk. Many top brands sell large sizes or bulk sizes to places like Sams Club and BJ's Wholesale. It will save you a pretty penny!

  5. Step 5

Color Out Highlights. Highlights getting way too expensive to maintain? Use a drugstore colorant like Perfect 10 (by Clairol, I think) to get back to your natural color. For blond highlights, leave it in an extra 5-10 minutes to ensure coloration, and you'll have very subtle, multidimensional hair without a maintenance price tag. BONUS--they come with great conditioners that make your hair unbelievably soft and glossy.

  6. Step 6

Color at Home. There are some excellent coloring and highlighting kits for salon looks at DIY prices. To ensure a better look, nab a friend and make a night of it--you'll end up saving yourself hundreds of dollars a year (if not a month!)

  7. Step 7

Cheap the Shampoo. Shampoo, like soap, is just as effective when it's cheap and basic. Conditioner can be a little more complex, and dependent on hair type, so if you're looking to downgrade one, choose the bargain shampoo.

  8. Step 8

Max Out Conditioner. Conditioners tend to say, "leave on for three minutes; rinse" but did you know that they continue to moisturize and condition up to 15 or 20 minutes? For a salon look from your drugstore conditioner, leave it in longer and rinse it with ice cold water. Super shine!
