Meatballs - whether Italian or Swedish – make an incredibly great sub-sandwich! Use your own favorite meatball recipe, frozen pre-made meatballs, or check out the links below for easy recipes from scratch. Making sub-sandwiches with leftover meatballs is not only easy and time saving - it saves money. Have you ever ordered a meatball sub, paid $5 or more for a 7 inch sub and said - that's all the meat we get? (4 tiny where-are-they sized meatballs!) Well - I did and was so disappointed that I wouldn't have tried making them if I hadn't had left over meatballs! Now, we plan on having meatball subs often!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Left over meatballs
  • Your favorite French bread, hard rolls or sub-sandwich bread
  • Mozzarella or Swiss cheese
  • Sauteed onions
  • Sauteed mushrooms
  • Sauteed pepper strips
  • Barbecue sauce
  • Mild to sharp cheddar cheese
  1. Step 1

You can make meatball sandwiches using either Italian, Swedish or generic store bought meatballs. Smaller meatballs make better subs. After all, why have giant meatballs - so big only one or two fit on a roll? Isn't that a lot like having a round hamburger?

For any of the following meatball sandwiches, pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees F.
For a crispy sub-sandwich, bake it on a cookie sheet for approximately 5 to 10 minutes.
For a softer sub, wrap in foil, being sure not to use too much sauce, or it will get too soggy, and bake for approximately 10 minutes.

  2. Step 2

    Swedish meatball sandwich:
Fit as many meat balls as desired on a split loaf of French bread or favorite hard roll or bun.
Top with some of the cream sauce, sauteed onions and/or mushrooms and Swiss cheese.

  3. Step 3

    Italian meatball sandwich:
Fit as many meat balls as desired on a split loaf of French bread or favorite hard roll or bun.
Top with some of the spaghetti sauce or marinara sauce, and mozzarella cheese.

  4. Step 4

    Good basic meatball sandwich:
Fit as many meat balls as desired on a split loaf of French bread or favorite hard roll or bun.
Top with favorite barbecue sauce, sauteed onions, sauteed peppers, sauteed mushrooms, and mild to sharp cheddar cheese.

Tips & Warnings
  • While baking the sub, touch the bread to be sure it isn't getting too crispy when using the unwrapped method.
  • If cheese isn't melting fast enough, take top off of the sandwich and use the broiler.
