Bulbs are the easiest flowers to use in your garden. They don't require a lot of work and you can enjoy their beauty year after year. Whether you prefer tulips, lilies, irises, or any other bulbs, this article will give you some quick and easy tips for making the most of your bulb garden.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • choice of bulbs
  • shovel or garden spade
  • bucket
  • water (preferably rain water)
  • compost
  • earthworms
  1. Step 1

Using the spade or shovel, dig a hole to the appropriate depth needed for the type of bulbs being planted.

  2. Step 2

Sprinkle compost in the bottom of the hole to a depth of 1/4 to 1 inch.

  3. Step 3

Pour enough water over the compost to wet it thoroughly.

  4. Step 4

Place the bulb(s) directly on top of the damp compost.

  5. Step 5

Add two earthworms per large bulb or one per small bulb. The worms will create air pockets and keep the ground loose for the roots. The worms also leave castings (poop) which is a natural fertilizer.

  6. Step 6

Gently sprinkle soil loosely to cover the bulbs. Tap the soil lightly but do not firmly pack.

  7. Step 7

Now sit back and enjoy your bulb garden!

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not add commercial fertilizer as this may kill your worms.
  • Water treated with chemicals may reduce the reproduction rate of the earthworms.
  • A healthy worm habitat will double the number of worms every 3-4 months but don't worry about over population. They know how to care for themselves and move on to other locations.
