Become a Mystery Shopper in Nevada

Nevada state law requires that in order to be a mystery shopper, you must be a licensed private investigator or be the employee of a licensed private investigator. Aside from this requirement, mystery shopping in Nevada is much the same as mystery shopping anywhere else. Secret shoppers visit all kinds of businesses, act like normal customers, then complete a report with their observations about the experience.

There are several mystery shopping companies that operate in Nevada with the proper licensing. When you are hired by one or more of these companies, you can become a mystery shopper and get paid to shop.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Apply to a company that is licensed to mystery shop in Nevada. You can find a link to licensed companies in the Resources below.

  2. Step 2

Get a work permit from your county sheriff, once the mystery shopping company says they want to hire you. The application process can take several hours, and you will be fingerprinted. There is a $90 fee (payable by you) and the permit is good for five years.

  3. Step 3

Never pay a fee to the mystery shopping company. They will not charge you to apply, and the work permit fee is payable to the county sheriff, not the mystery shopping company. There is also a fee to register you with the Private Investigator Licensing Board, and the mystery shopping company will pay that fee.

  4. Step 4

Follow through with any training or assignments provided by the mystery shopping company. Nevada mystery shoppers visit stores, restaurants, banks, apartment complexes and other businesses.

Tips & Warnings
  • Nevada mystery shoppers are employees of the private investigators, not Independent Contractors as in most other states.
  • Mystery shopping is usually not a full-time job, and you may work for more than one mystery shopping company.
  • Mystery shopping in Nevada without the proper license can result in a fine of $2500 for the first offense.
