How to Make an Inexpensive Carpet Cleaning Solution

Make your own carpet cleaning solution to save money.

Most homemade cleaning products are safer than commercial products, according to the Environmental Protection Organization. If your carpet is stained, there is no need to use expensive products or strong chemicals. Carpet cleaners can be made with household products you likely already have at home. There are many recipes for inexpensive carpet cleaning solutions; try different ones until you find the best for your home.

Things You'll Need

• 1/4 tsp. translucent dish washing detergent
• 1 cup warm water
• White cloth
• 1 tbsp. clear ammonia
• 1/2 cup lukewarm water
• Spray bottle
• 1 tsp. white vinegar
• 1 tsp. liquid detergent
• 1 pt. lukewarm water
• Towels

Instructions

Translucent Detergent Solution

1. Mix 1/4 tsp. of translucent dish washing detergent with 1 cup of warm water.

2. Dip white cloth into mixture. Rub the cloth gently, with little pressure on stain.

3. Rinse with a clean, wet cloth.

Ammonia Solution

1. Mix 1 tbsp. of clear ammonia with 1/2 cup of lukewarm water.

2. Spray into stain lightly with spray bottle. Let sit for five to 10 minutes.

3. Rub stain with minimal pressure until it is gone. Rinse with a clean wet cloth.

Vinegar and Liquid Soap Solution

1. Mix 1 tsp. of white vinegar, 1 tsp. of liquid detergent and 1 pt. of lukewarm water.

2. Apply solution to stain with a towel. Rub gently on stain.

3. Rinse with a clean damp towel. Blot dry.

Tips & Warnings

• Repeat the process as necessary to remove the stain.

• Try the solution in a small area of your carpet before using it.
