Step 1
When you see a white ring on your furniture clean up the moisture then use a very mild abrasive to get out the ring. The white ring would indicate that the stain is in the finish and not the wood.
-
Step 2
Mix up a mild abrasive of mineral oil and ash or use plain tooth paste and work along the wood grain to gently lift out the stain.
-
Step 3
If the ring hasn't lifted then use a slightly more abrasive material, 000 stealwool, and gently work along the grain as this will remove the finish more easily.
-
Step 4
When the ring has lifted clean the surface, wax and buff the whole piece.
-
Step 5
Any stains that leave a black mark are stains that have reached and penetrated the wood surface. These can't be removed with polish or mild abrasives. A professional may be needed to remove wood furniture stains or you can tackle it yourself.
-
Step 6
If you decide to do it yourself, first strip the finish from the whole piece then clean the surface of any dust, oils or grease.
-
Step 7
Use a higher strength dilution of chlorine bleach and water directly on the black stain. If the black stain doesn't completely disappear a stronger bleaching agent may be needed (oxalic acid).
-
Step 8
When the stain is removed, use a weaker solution of bleach and water and bleach the whole piece to even out the color.
-
Step 9
Follow the directions of how to neutralize, the particular bleaching agent you've used, on it's package. Wipe down the whole piece with clean water and allow to dry for a few days. You've now successfully removed one of the most persistent wood furniture stains.
