How to Be a Transcriber
When most people think of a transcriber they think of medical transcription. But there are also general transcribers that don't handle anything related to the medical field. General transcription is transcribing tapes into a typed format. A general transcriptionist transcribes seminars, online conferences, webinars, and even police interviews. This field can be very lucrative if you have the skills needed.
Things You'll Need
- Must type at least 75 wpm
- Must have a good take on English dialect. (Grammar)
- Transcriber machine, foot pedal and headset
- Dictionary and other resources in the field you are transcribing.

Develop your ear. If you already have the speed it is time to train your ear to dictation. This is easier said then done when dictating a taped voice. It does get easier with practice. There are dictation tapes that you can practice with. A quick search online google will bring up great results.

Build your speed. If you don't have the speed you won't make much money in transcription. The good news is speed can be increased over time and practice. Mavis Beacon is a great program to help develop your speed and you can try it for free online.

Equipment purchase. Without the proper tools you will not make it in this business. A standard cassette transcriber, foot pedal and headset is a must. It will save you time which means you have more time to earn more by transcribing more.

Reference tools are another thing you can not do without. A standard dictionary along with any other reference tool that is in the field that you are transcribing is a must. Take a look at the resource section to get a great resource start.
