A laptop keyboard can get dirty from every day use. If your keys are starting to stick or just looking nasty, then it is time to clean it up. With a few simple steps you can have your laptop keyboard looking good as new!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Turn off your laptop and unplug it from any power source. Also, it is a good idea to remove the battery. After removing all power sources, press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds to dissipate any remaining electricity.

  2. Step 2

Use a soft and clean cloth and gently wipe the keyboard area to remove any crumbs and debris. Do not use a paper towel as it may leave lint or scratch your computer. If this does not remove everything then you may also want to turn the computer upside down over a garbage can and gently tap it to remove more debris.

  3. Step 3

Next, take your can of compressed air and blow out anything that is left. The air will have a chemical inside of it, so be careful not to spray it directly into the computer. Hold it at an angle a few inches above the keyboard.

Also use the compressed air to clean out I/O ports and vents.

  4. Step 4

If your keyboard need further cleaning, then it is time to use some cleanser!

Use a soft cloth and dampen it in a solution of half warm water and half isopropyl alcohol. Wring out the cloth so that it is not saturated and proceed to wipe down the keyboard. Make sure not to drip any liquid into the computer!

If there are areas that are very tight or hard to reach then use cotton swabs dampened in the same solution. With a swab you can get in between the keys other spots.

You can also use this cloth to wipe down your touch pad.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try and keep your computer away from food and drinks
  • Do not spray any liquid or cleaning fluid directly onto the computer.
