Step 1
Most flat tires occur in the form of a blowout. A puncture in your tire releases all of the air instantly. This first thing when you experience a flat tire is to maintain control of your car.
-
Step 2
You can keep control of your car safely by gripping the steering wheel tightly. Do not immediately step on your brakes. Release your foot off of the gas pedal and let your car coast a bit to make sure that you are in control. A flat tire in the front will give you a strong pull in the direction of the flat tire. A flat tire in the rear wheel will make controlling the car's fishtail difficult.
-
Step 3
You must effectively change lanes before you lost too much of your car's speed. Make sure that you emergency blinkers are on, and try to pull as far from the traffic lines as possible. If you can, you might try to match the speed of the cars nearby to avoid a collision.
-
Step 4
Pull over to the next exit or if there aren't any, pull as far to the roadside as possible to avoid any accidents. Remember to keep your emergency flashers on. Avoid any muddy areas or soft shoulders.
-
Step 5
Lastly, never drive on a flat tire. You can ruin the tire so that it is beyond repair. You can also severely damage your wheel. Once you have safely pulled over, mount on a spare tire or call for help!
