Hamsters are great pets but it is important that they are properly cared for. If you keep your hamster healthy and happy, he/she will provide several years of enjoyment.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cage
  • water bottle
  • food bowl
  • running wheel
  • chew toys
  • bedding
  • hamster food
  • fruits and vegetables
  1. Step 1

Purchase a cage, hamster bedding, food bowl, water bottle with holder, hamster wheel, hamster food, and plenty of treats and chew toys.

  2. Step 2

Set up the cage using the instructions, put bedding on the floor of the cage, fill the water bottle with water and attach to the cage, fill the food bowl with food and place on the floor or attach to the cage, and place the wheel and chew toys in the cage.

  3. Step 3

Take the hamster out of the box you brought him/her home in and place him in the cage. Give your hamster a name. Let him/her stay in the cage for a few hours before taking him/her out. After a couple of hours, take him/her out and hold him. Let him get used to you by petting him/her and allowing him/her to crawl around. Be careful to not squeeze him/her. He/she may bit at first but it is only out of fear.

  4. Step 4

For food, there are a lot of choices. You can buy food pellets or a loose mix (both are purchase in pet stores or discount department stores). You should also supplement store bought food with healthy fruits and vegetables such as carrots, apples, celery, grapes, oranges, and lettuce.

  5. Step 5

Hamsters need to be able to chew and exercise. A hamster wheel is very important because hamsters need to run and you can't let your hamster run around the house (he/she will chew on electrical wires which will result in death). Hamsters also should have a variety of wood toys, cardboard tubes and tunnels and things they can climb on.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not purchase wire running wheels
  • Wash fruits and vegetables to remove any chemicals prior to feeding hamsters
  • It is not advised that just anybody try to breed hamsters. Hamster breeding should be left to people who understand the process and can ensure the safety of the mother and babies.
