Many dream while sitting in their cubicle about the adventure of traveling around the world, but few escape their small little prison. The reason many only travel the world in their fantasies is fear of the unknown. It is a brave step to quit your job and leave your friends and family on an amazing adventure, but it is possible. From childhood we have been programmed to get good grades and become successful. We long for adventure and travel, but doing it at the cost of furthering your career is frowned upon by society.

If you want to travel the world, the first order of business is cutting expenses. Rent your condo, sell your car and sell your furniture. The first order of business is to make sure any large expenses at home are reduced. If you plan to travel the world, you cannot have a mortgage, car payment or furniture payment hanging over your head. If you own a condo or house, it will probably be necessary to rent instead of selling. Craigslist and Airbnb.com are good places to list your place for rent. Carmax and dealers like it may buy your car.

If you do not, a good place to start world travel is by finding work overseas. Teaching English overseas in countries like Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea is a great way to to begin overseas travel and to earn money at the same time. Many people will work as a teacher for a year and then travel when their contract has ended.

The world is a big place and the first decision you will have to make is where you want to go. The best way of doing this is reading first-hand accounts of others who have taken the steps you are about to make. If Europe is your destination of choice, then look into a Eurail pass which allows unlimited train travel over specified periods. If you plan on doing a lot of flying, then consider researching around-the-world plane tickets. Several carriers allow unlimited flying over certain periods and this could save a lot of money.
