Get Rid of Burps

AVOID THE BEHAVIORS THAT DRAW IN ADDITIONAL AIR: Burping is caused by gas in the stomach escaping through the esophagus. We draw air in when we breath, eat, or exercise. It's a natural part of life. However, certain behaviors will draw in additional air and can cause excessive gas to build up in the stomach. Chewing gum, eating and drinking too fast, drinking through a straw and even smoking are all behaviors that draw in additional air into our stomachs. Avoiding these or keeping them to a minimum are all ways to help reduce belching.

FOODS: You've heard it before, but it's true. Carbonated beverages cause excessive gas to enter your stomach and cause you to get a case of the burps. Great for burp contests, probably not so great if you're out on a date. Stick to water or other non carbonated beverages if you don't want to be burping the rest of the night.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (or GERD), a hiatal hernia, and other medical conditions can increase burping episodes. Most of these conditions can be easily treated with medications. If you feel that you have excessive belching, see your doctor. They may be able to prescribe something for you.

LOOK FOR PATTERNS: A recent study on burps found that most people have a pattern for belching. Some people talk too fast and draw in lot's of air which causes belching or stomach upset. Others consume large quantities of sodas. Others work in fields where eating fast and on the go is a necessity. All of these contribute to cases of burping. Really study your burping patterns and see what can be done about changing some of your behaviors if you can.

WHAT FOODS TO AVOID: Certain foods will increase your burps. Beans like garbanzo, pinto and navy increase gases in your system. Cabbage, cucumbers, and bell peppers can be gas causing offenders too. Spicy foods, and highly acidic foods like coffee and tea can increase your stomach acidity and also bring havoc to your system. Onions and tomatoes are pretty good offenders too.

DON'T OVERLOOK THE MOST COMMON OFFENDER: One of the most common offenders to causing gas are mints and chocolates. Speechmastery.com states that mints and chocolates should be stopped at least one to four hours before giving a speech. Mints and hard candies often cause increased air intake without us conciously realizing it. And mints and chocolates both relax the lower esophageal sphincter muscle which increases your risk of unwanted belches.
