Know the Keys to Success
Know the Keys to Success

Whether we like it or not money is a determining factor on if we can meet our goals in life, or not. It does effect the out come of your future and the future of those you love. Money is important but unfortunately most people never learn how to handle it. They never learn the right steps to success.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • You and your thinking cap
  1. Step 1

Evaluate your situation, set some goals and develop a plan of action.
What is your financial situation at the moment? You need to set realistic goals that you can meet. Remember nothing happens with out a plan.

  2. Step 2

    Become knowledgeable.
You can avoid pitfalls from bad advice if you have done your research. It will also keep you from those who are always willing to help you help themselves with your money. It is very important to make adequate consumer decisions.

  3. Step 3

Understand investing principles and what investments are out there.
Don't be ignorant when it comes your to money. There are so many investments out there it is hard to choose which is best for you. You need to learn and gain the knowledge of all types of investments before you start putting your your money away. This is also part of making a plan for your finances.

  4. Step 4

Budget and live below your means.
You need to know how much you have to work with from the start. Take a look at what you spend per month. Track your expense. Once you have seen what you are spending and what you actually make see if you can cut back on the expenses. Make sure you are not spending more than you make. If you are than that is something that needs to be remedied. You can't save money if you are spending more than you earn. Put the money you save up into a mutual fund or other investment so you won't spend that money.

  5. Step 5

    Don't stop learning.
Learning is knowledge and knowledge is power. We all start off somewhere. Do you remember your first job and how much skill you had then. Now think about how much you have learned between then and now and how much more you make. The more skills and talents you have the better job you will find. Make sure the skills and talents you learn are valued in the workforce. To keep your skills unique you need to continually upgrade your skills. No one can stand still and survive in this life.

  6. Step 6

Manage your cash flow and your credit.
If you have credit problems you should probably avoid using credit cards. The problem is not the credit cards but the debt that they cause. Practice a bit of restraint. The best way to use credit cards is to use them only for emergencies. This will keep you from spending more than you have. Remember step 4 live below your means.

  7. Step 7

    Control your debt.
Not all debt is bad. How else do you plan to buy a house. There are limits to going into debt. You need to make sure you are in a financial position to pay off your monthly balance before you get into anything you can’t handle. This is all part of your financial planning, budgeting and goal setting. Always stick to the key: Spend less than what you earn.

  8. Step 8

    Protect yourself and your assets.
You are not indestructible. Any number of emergencies could happen. You need to be ready for them. Make sure you have an emergency plan that includes emergency funds. Make sure you are covered with insurance. You would not want to loose everything thing you have worked so hard to get. One financial crises could wipe you at. Make sure you can handle the odds.

  9. Step 9

    Don't betray your values.
Your financial decisions are going to effect not only your goals but also your lifestyle. Your personal life and your financial life will always be intertwined. It is up to you to find a balance between the two. Always remember no matter how much money you have if you have betrayed your values you will not be happy.

  10. Step 10

Make financial decisions that will gear you towards your goals.
you will never achieve your goal if you do not start with the right choices. Think about the path you plan to take and learn all about the investments you need to ensure they are the right paths to get to your goals. Don’t forget to invest your money and make sure when you invest you diversify your investments. Yes investment can be risky but diversification can help reduce the risks. If you don’t take some risks you don’t have a chance of meeting your goals.

  11. Step 11

    Think of the future.
Most young people don't think about there retirement. Its so far in the future who needs to worry about that now. What happens when that time rolls around and you have absolutely no money? How will you survive? Remember saving money is not a natural event. You need to make it happen

  12. Step 12

    Plan for after death.
None of us live forever. What will happen to our assets and our money after we die. Who will get everything we have worked so hard to earn? The government? Personally I would prefer to keep it in the family. What if you die young and leave your children or spouse with house payments or other debt? You need to think about all of this and it is especially important to think about getting a will if you have family. Make sure you have a will that states who gets what and what goes where.

  13. Step 13

One of the most important keys to remember is: It starts now.
Don't procrastinate you need to start early. You must make the choice to take control and get started managing your finances or you can just let things happen. The second choice is not the successful choice.

Tips & Warnings
  • Just remember the goals you have set and continually work to meet them.
  • Frugality sets the stage for success in personal finance. You don't need a mansion or a hummer to be happy. It is a lot easier to be happy if it does not depend on money.
