Optimize Breastmilk Storage

Are you a new mother and having to pump breastmilk? Finding a system that works can be hard. Here are simple steps to help optimize breastmilk storage! Using frozen breastmilk has never been easier!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Medela freezer bags "Pump & Save"
  1. Step 1

Begin by deciding whether you are going to pump directly into Pump & Save bags or transfer milk from the pumping containers to the bags. Frozen breastmilk should be stored in bags by the end of each day so you do not become overwhelmed with excess milk. Remember: breastmilk is only good for 5-7 days in your refrigerator.

  2. Step 2

Date each bag of frozen breastmilk and write the amount of milk you have sealed into it. Do not fill milk past the last line because when frozen the milk will expand!

  3. Step 3

Designate shelves or containers in your freezer for each month's supply. Always use milk from the earliest to latest. Frozen breastmilk is good for 3 months! If you are using a deep freezer breastmilk storage time increases to 6 months.

  4. Step 4

Try freezing all fresh milk and giving your child frozen breasmilk so you are able to continue storing milk and using it before it goes bad. Calculate how much breastmilk your child is drinking each day and take a certain amount of bags out of your freezer each night. You can put frozen milk in the fridge to thaw and it will be good for 24 hours! Try to plan a day ahead!
