Once you are already diagnosed with Arthritis, you now need to know how to cope with the pain of lifelong arthritis. Arthritis is basically defined as the inflammation of the joints. There are several types of arthritis and usually classified according to their origin, onset and cause. Accompanying arthritis is arthralgia or better known as joint pain. Excruciating pain is often experienced by patients with arthritis. The inflammation of the joints produces stiffness, redness, warmth, and of course swelling. Medical practitioners would often tell their patients about the long term goal of pain management for arthritis. Let me share with you some helpful ways on how to cope with the pain of lifelong arthritis.

  1. Step 1

    Upon diagnosis of arthritis, your physician will refer you to other health care professionals that can help you in managing pain for arthritis. These professionals would include physical therapists and rheumatologists or doctors who are specializing in arthritis. The health care team members will provide you means on how to manage pain attacks of arthritis.

  2. Step 2

    Aside from physical therapists, occupational therapists are also there to help you continue your activities of daily living even if you are diagnosed with arthritis.

  3. Step 3

    Try joining yoga or meditation classes. These classes are often useful in alleviating pain and diverting your attention to other things rather than thinking of pain.

  4. Step 4

    Join organizations of patients with arthritis or self-help groups. You will learn a lot from these organizations. Usually, patients are sharing their experiences and their strategies in coping with arthritis. You can take note of these stories or even apply the strategies to your self.

  5. Step 5

    Adhere to your medication. Once your doctor has prescribed you with the drugs to take for arthritis, stick to it. However, you should also do a little research about your medications’ side effects or adverse effects.

  • It is normal to feel grief upon knowing that you have arthritis; however, you should learn to accept it and live with it.
  • Pain medications should be taken in moderation. Do not overdose yourself with pain medications to relieve arthralgia.
  • Surgery can relieve joint swelling and pain in patients with arthritis.
