Medical bills can get so out of hand you literally need to get a second job to pay them, except for that you're too sick to. Unfortunately, the United States health care system is broken; it leaves the uninsured to fend for themselves and die and it leaves the poorly insured deep in debt. Even those with good insurance can find themselves needing tests that their insurance just won't cover and that leaves us to fend for ourselves. Here are a couple ideas that were used at my boyfriend's work to raise over $30K for his coworker with Leukemia.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find someone at work who wants to lose lots of weight. Have a weight-a-thon and have people pledge a dollar amount for every pound that your coworker looses. A month is a good time frame for this to last. Make sure it is well publicized within the company and make it a fun event that everyone is excited for. It helps to make it a competition among coworkers - who can donate the most per pound.

  2. Step 2

Another fun idea is a raffle. You want to make sure to raffle fun things like homemade pies, cookies or wine. Having work done for someone like an hour of yard work or maybe free services from a company someone owns like electrical or plumbing. If you can get bigger gifts the donations will be better. Some companies may be willing to donate larger things like massages and cruises. You can find someone who is in a home based business like Mary Kay or Herbal Life and have them donate a gift basket. Raffle ticket buyer will be more apt to buy a ticket the more fun the prize is.

  3. Step 3

An easy way for people to donate is for you to open a fund at the bank that people can donate into. If you can get your story on the news that is optimal, it lets everyone know your situation. If not you can still post the information on any number of social websites letting people know how to donate. Write out your story in detail so they understand. You can even submit the story to Reader's Digest. The more people that know about it, the more people can donate.

  4. Step 4

There are also charities already set up in the name of your specific illness. If you need help call them or look them up online and see what programs they have set up for you.
