How to Cook an Egg White Sandwich

This how-to shows you how to make an egg white sandwich from start to finish.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • eggs OR Egg Beaters[tm] egg whites
  • bread
  • butter (or margarine)
  • mayonnaise
  • seasoning (ie, pepper)
  1. Step 1

    Gather all ingredients and utensils:
    - pan
    - spatula
    - butter or margarine
    - eggs or Egg Beaters[tm] egg whites
    - mayonnaise
    - bread

  2. Step 2

    Take a conservative amount of butter/margarine and place it in your pan. Turn heat on to "medium/low." Let butter begin to melt and as it does, spread it evenly on the bottom of the pan.

    Now that your butter is melting, it is now safe to put the eggs in the pan. I like to put enough eggs to cover the pan since I'm trying to get a meal rich in protein. You may of course put more or less.

    If you'd like to save time (like I do!) and multi-task, you can begin putting mayonnaise on 2 slices of bread while your eggs are cooking. If you are not comfortable doing this, it is OK to do it after your eggs are done cooking. Spread the mayonnaise evenly on the bread.

    By this point your eggs should have begun to change from runny to more firm. Carefully take your eggs and flip them. Personally, I take my eggs and divide them evenly into four pieces as seen in this picture. This makes it much easier to flip them.

    Let your egg quadrants cook for another 2-3 minutes until they brown. Once they have browned, turn the heat off. If you have not put mayonnaise on your bread, now is the perfect time to do so... the heat from the range will keep your eggs warm while you prep your bread. This is a good time to season your eggs (pepper, salt, etc).

    Now that your eggs have been cooked, it's time to assemble your egg white sandwich! Carefully place your quadrants one-by-one onto your bread.

    Now that you have all 4 of your quadrants on your bread... you can put the remaining slice of bread on top to complete your sandwich.

Tips & Warnings
  • EggBeaters Egg Whites are a little more expensive than a dozen eggs... but it is much quicker & cleaner since you don't have to worry about separating out the yolk. I can get about 3 or 4 sandwiches worth of eggs out of one carton of egg beaters egg whites. I can also get a comparable 4 sandwiches out of a dozen eggs. You should take into account monetary concerns for yourself (costs will vary with geography)
  • If you have anyone else that cooks in the house and requires only egg yolks, have them save the egg whites for you (ie, my mother sometimes makes holinday sauce and saves the egg whites for me)
  • keep in mind mayonnaise has a significant amount of sodium (ie, salt) in it so when you are seasoning your eggs, salt is likely not necessary
  • if you do not feel comfortable spreading mayonnaise while your eggs are cooking, it is OK to simply wait until the cooking portion has finished. Safety first!
