Clean a Gas Oven
Clean a Gas Oven

Oven cleaning is one of those cleaning jobs where you may actually consider moving as an alternative! Many ovens have self-cleaning features, but they require oven cleaners containing harsh chemicals and extreme heat to work. If you have a gas oven that needs a good cleaning you can get it looking pretty good without all the commercial oven cleaners. Read on to find out how to clean a gas oven.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Make sure the oven is completely cool before you start trying to clean the gas oven.

  2. Step 2

While the oven racks are still in place quickly scrape any burned on food so that it falls to bottom of the oven.

  3. Step 3

Remove the oven racks and place them in the sink.

  4. Step 4

If you have burned on food (ie cheese from pizza), stuck to the oven floor, use a rubber flipping spatula to get it loose.

  5. Step 5

Use a wet paper towel to pick up as much of the burned food as you can.

  6. Step 6

Slightly moisten a magic eraser and begin cleaning the walls and floor, as well as the oven door.

  7. Step 7

The next step in cleaning the gas oven is to wipe the entire thing down with a wet rag.

  8. Step 8

Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda all over the inside of the oven. Use a slightly wet rag to work the baking soda into a paste. Let it sit in the gas oven for about 30 minutes.

  9. Step 9

While you're waiting, clean the oven racks with hot soapy water. The rough side of a sponge should be enough to remove any crusted on food.

  10. Step 10

Return to the actual oven cleaning by using the rough side of a sponge in a circular motion. Concentrate on cleaning small areas.

  11. Step 11

When you've finished cleaning the entire gas oven wipe it down, again, with a wet rag. Be sure to remove all of the baking soda.

  12. Step 12

If you still don't have a clean oven you may need to get an oven cleaner. Just make sure it's safe to use in a gas oven.

Tips & Warnings
  • To keep your oven clean place a large piece of aluminum foil on the bottom rack. It will catch most spills and keep your oven looking clean for a lot longer!
