Coupons are an easy way to save money on groceries. You may stand in shock watching your grocery bill reduce by $30, $40, or even $50. However, the customer in line behind you may not be as pleased with your savings. It is no secret that coupons save shoppers money, but it is also no secret that they occasionally hold up the line. How can you prevent that from happening?

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Coupon Organizer
  • Envelope
  • Paper
  • Pen
  1. Step 1

Sort your coupons ahead of time. Not only can sorting coupons save you time at the checkout, it can also save you money. Alto often consumers forget about the coupons they have, not remembering until after they leave the store. When sorting your coupons, you can use a coupon organizer or a plain envelope. Sort by category or the stores you intend to shop at.

  2. Step 2

Make a small symbol next to your grocery list for each item that you have a coupon for. A great idea is to draw a money symbol or actually write the word coupon. Once again, this allows you to remember that you have a coupon. It not only saves you time at the checkout, but increases the money saved.

  3. Step 3

Separate coupons as you put the items into the cart. As for why your grocery list helps, you know which items have coupons. As soon as you put an item into the grocery cart, set that coupon aside. If you have a coupon organizer, place the coupons in the front or back. If only using envelopes, have a separate envelope for used coupons or place each coupon in your pocket. This saves you time at the checkout, as your coupons are already sorted; you now just hand them to the cashier.

  4. Step 4

Write any needed price information on the coupon yourself. Occasionally, you will find grocery coupons that allow you to buy one item and get another free. On the coupon, you will find a section for the retail price. If you have a pen, write it in yourself. Otherwise, save the item in question for last at the register. This prevents your cashier from having to print a draft of your receipt to find the item and price in question.

  5. Step 5

When at the checkout, recheck each of your coupons. You already have your grocery coupons pulled aside, but go back through your coupon organizer or envelope to make sure you didn’t miss any. Do this while the cashier is scanning your items, not afterwards.

  6. Step 6

Start processing your payment. If you are paying with a personal check, start writing your check as your cashier is scanning your items. If you are paying with a credit or debit card, ask if you can scan the card early. This will only save a few seconds, but it is seconds the customer behind you will appreciate.
