Step 1
Ask your hypnotherapist if he has pre-recorded tapes or CDs on the issue you are getting help for. If he doesn’t, he may be willing to do a recording for you for at a nominal price. In addition to getting your own personal recording, there are self-hypnosis tools available that you can buy online and in bookstores to supplement your in-office visits at home.
-
Step 2
Use your self-help tools in an environment that best simulates the relaxed, secure feeling of your in-office experience. Make time to use these tools between your appointments to maximize and reinforce the hypnotic suggestions that you receive from your therapist. DO NOT listen to hypnosis inducing recordings while driving!
-
Step 3
Track your progress. For example, if you’re using hypnosis to lose weight, the scale should not be your only measure of success. You should also pay attention to any new behaviors or feelings about your eating habits. Keep a journal to see if your new behaviors and feelings are in sync with the suggestions you’re given during your hypnosis sessions. Share this information with your hypnotherapist during your in-office visits.
-
Step 4
Share your progress with family and friends. Those who are dear to you may have some false impressions about hypnosis, sharing your hypnosis process and the benefits you’re receiving from it may help them to understand why it’s important to you. Also, verbalizing the positive changes that are taking place for you can help to reinforce your new behavior.

on 7/6/2009 I've wanted to try hypnosis for a while, but maybe this year I'll take the plunge. I enjoyed reading the article and didn't realize that you could ask a hypnotherapist to custom record a tape. That is good to know. Relevant warning to not drive while listening to tapes. 5*
