Salon manicures are expensive, and home manicures are time consuming. However your nails were polished, it's very frustrating to have them chip just days later. Read on for easy steps to extend the life of your manicure.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Before applying polish, swipe a cotton ball with soaked in polish remover across your nails. This will remove any natural oils or lotion residue that could prevent polish from adhering properly.

  2. Step 2

Apply polish to nails in thin layers. They dry faster and are less likely to chip or peel than thicker layers. Also be sure to apply polish and top coat to the tips of nails - this will extend the life of your manicure.

  3. Step 3

Give your nails adequate time to dry. If you are at a salon, sit through at least two cycles at the dryer, preferably three. At home, allow to air dry for 30 minutes. Always use some form of quick-dry, typically an oily substance that allows clothing or anything else that touches your nails to slip by rather than smudge the polish.

  4. Step 4

Re-apply clear top coat every two or three days, making sure to paint the tips. This will seal any areas that have begun to wear and prevent them from chipping further.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wear gloves when washing the dishes or doing other housework.
  • Professional grade polishes (such as Essie and OPI) tend to last longer than most drugstore brands.
