Step 1
The first step to getting your hair work published is actually having something to publish. Although you may be an excellent hairstylist, if you don't have an excellent model then chances of getting published are slim. Start with your clientele, ask to take their picture and then compare with pictures in the magazines of where you want to be published. A good resource for models are modeling schools, these models are looking to build their portfolio as well and typically do not charge.
-
Step 2
Choose the publications you want to submit your work too. Be sure to check for the submission guidelines for each publication as each has their own set of guidelines. While selecting publications think of crawl, walk, run. You wouldn't start off with a large fashion magazine like Vogue as your first submission, so look at local magazines and newspapers first, then industry publications such as Modern Salon, and then to larger publications. Even specialty publications like teen, bridal, or music magazines are also great places to submit your work.
-
Step 3
Once you have chosen your model, chose what type of publishing piece will be your end result. If it's a fashion piece, then choose a theme and make sure the hair, model clothes, and background represent that theme. For a "how to" take pictures of the before, the steps involved, and the end result. Writing a short article of the steps to accompany the photos is needed. These pieces are usually the easiest to get published.
-
Step 4
Do all pre-work such as color and cut before the day of the photo-shoot. If the photo-work is a how-to, such as a hair cut, then doing the photo's during the actual cut is fine. However, to be on the safe side, doing the haircut before hand and being able to just show sectioning, and how the hair would be cut is actually a better idea so there are no "surprises" at the end. It's best to actually take a few test photo's during this step to make ensure success during the actual photo-shoot.
-
Step 5
Set up and do the photo-shoot. Choose the best three to four pictures for submission. If a how-to piece, make sure you have several photographs of each step. Choose the best picture for each step.
-
Step 6
Submit your work to the publications following their specific guidelines you chose in step two. Be sure to include in any submission, black and white head shot and a short bio of yourself.
