How to Have a Great Backyard Camping Birthday Party
Many children enjoy the outdoor experience, and camping makes an excellent theme for a birthday party. Instead of taking the party to an official campground, set up your back yard to mimic the experience and host your birthday celebration. With a few decorations and pre-planned activities, you can set the mood for a camping party.

1
Choose a safe location for the party. If you do not have a fenced-in back yard or don't live in a very safe, private location, ask a friend or neighbor to use his back yard for the party. Determine the time, date and place of the celebration. If you plan to have a camping sleepover, recruit parents of guests to attend the party.

2
Send out invitations at least two weeks in advance. Include the date, time and location as well as anything you wish guests to bring, such as a sleeping bag. Tie in the camping theme on the invitations using photographs of camping or images of camping-related items such as lanterns, tents or sleeping bags.

3
Make a sign out of poster board. Post a sign near the entrance to your back yard for your special birthday person that says, "[His name]'s Camping Site." Place streamers around your fence and tie balloons to fence posts.
-
4
Place LED lanterns around your back yard. This not only sets the camping mood, but also provides safety for the guests at the party.
-
5
Set up a tent or multiple tents for your guests. The tents should be able to withstand any specific weather in your area such as light rain or wind.
-
6
Set up a snack table. Ideally, this should be in a sheltered location. Stock a cooler with a variety of drinks, and place the birthday cake, plates and utensils in this area. Leave this set up for the entire party so that guests can help themselves to food throughout the evening. Add camping decorations such as additional LED lanterns, and serve camping food such as hot dogs and beans.

7
Serve S'mores. Have a variety of marshmallows such as chocolate and plain for guests to choose from. Tell scary, but age-appropriate, stories as you sit by the fire. If you do not want to have a fire pit, take the guests inside and use the microwave for this activity.
