Step 1
There are several things to keep in mind when designing a toy for your hamster. The first is that hamsters will chew on most of their toys - so make absolutely sure that your toys are non-toxic and don't have sharp edges. Also, remember that hamsters enjoy a variety of behaviors - so try to have a balance of toys that let them relax and sleep, and those that let them be active and explore.
-
Step 2
Wooden toys are very much enjoyed by hamsters, as they will chew on the edges to keep their teeth in good shape. The best wood to use is the wood of a fruit tree, such as apple or pear. Remember that your pet is small, so you can make fun toys just by cutting a branch into short segments.

Step 3
Cardboard is another source of fun for your hamster. Most hamsters love to crawl into the cast-off cardboard from paper towel rolls. Hamsters also enjoy egg cartons, and you could fashion these into a small house for your hamster to live. Don't spend TOO much time creating toys out of thin cardboard - chances are good that the hamster will destroy them eventually, and they will require replacement.

on 8/29/2009 Don't use paper towel/toilet paper rolls. The reason is because most of paper towel/toilet paper companies (bounty, charmin ect.) use fiberglass in the cardboard to make it thinner, thus creating mega super big rolls and more money. Hamsters, rats, rabbits ect. although they love these toys, cannot digest the fiberglass and might die. Many people don't know about this (I only found out a couple months ago), but spread the word!
