How to Sew a Choir Robe

Standard issue for many choirs, choir robes give members a cohesive appearance when in formation. Choir robes have a fairly simple construction and add an air of formality to a choir's presence. For a sewer with some experience, a robe can be completed in a matter of hours.

1. Obtain a pattern. Choir robe patterns can be found through a number of manufacturers in fabric stores. Look through various pattern books until you find the pattern that best suits your needs. If you have difficulty finding a pattern that works for you, check retailers online or go directly to the manufacturer.

2. Cut out your robe. Lay out your fabric and attach your pattern with pins. The pattern will instruct you which areas to pin along the fold of the fabric. Make sure your fabric stays in place, otherwise your robe will become twisted. Follow the sizing lines of the robe carefully as you cut it out.

3. Attach the pieces of the robe, according to the pattern directions. Typically this beings with sewing the dress part of the robe together. Turn the dress piece inside out, and sew the panels together. Attach the sleeves to the dress piece by placing the sleeves and the dress piece right sides together and sewing around the circle of the arm hole.

4. Sew the hem lines. Hem the sleeves according to the arm lengths of the choir members, or according to the pattern instructions. A sleeve hem for a choir robe typically ranges from mid-palm to the wrist. Hem the edges of the opening in the front of the robe. Fold about one-quarter of an inch over, and then fold it over once more and hem it in place. Lastly, hem the bottom edge of the robe to the height of the choir member or according to the pattern directions. Choir robes vary in length according to the preference of the choir, however a standard rob rests at the bottom of the knee or lower.

5. Add finishing elements. Attach buttons, embellishment and zippers. Zippers are easily attached by lining them up with the front opening and simply stitching them in place. Place any buttons or embellishments at your own discretion.
