Pick a Padlock With a Paper Clip

It actually takes two tools to pick a padlock, but these can both be crudely fashioned with a single paperclip. Though the process is simple and the materials quite commonplace, it can be challenging for the beginner to get the "hang" of lock-picking. With practice, however, popping a low quality lock with a paperclip becomes quite quick.

Instructions

    • 1

Separate paperclip. First, unfold the paperclip with a single bend so it is in an "S" shape. Snap the clip in the center by bending back and forth repeatedly. Unfold the two separated piece into "L" shapes, which can be used as the classic pick and torsion wrench tools of a lock-pick.

    • 2

Insert wrench. One of the two "L" shapes can be used as a torsion wrench by inserting it about 1/2" into the bottom of the keyhole. Use the hooked end of the piece that was originally in the center of the paperclip where the break took place.

    • 3

Insert pick. Insert the straight, unhooked end of the other "L" shape into the center of the keyhole at the rounded bend. This will act as a pick to lift the pins of the lock out of place.

    • 4

Quickly, but careful not to bend the paperclip pieces, apply clockwise and downward pressure on the lock with the wrench and jiggle the pick up and down, keeping it in the center of the keyhole.

    • 5

Pop the lock. When the pins are displaced and come to rest on the displaced plug of the of the lock, the part that contains the shaft for the key, the clockwise pressure on the wrench will turn the keyhole and pop open the lock.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the keyhole is too small, use the straight, unhooked end of the wrench to create extra space.

  • Though picking a padlock shouldn't damage the lock, it is possible to render the lock unusable. Never pick a lock you don't own or have permission to pick. Doing so can be illegal.
