Things You'll Need:
- Mirror Photos

Step 1
Trust your instincts. It may seem obvious, but if you think your hair is thinning, it probably is. If you have any close-up, high-quality pictures of your head from a few years ago, look at them and compare what you see in the picture with what you see in the mirror.
-
Step 2
Look at your part. If your hair is thinning, your part will appear wider and more defined.
-
Step 3
Watch for a receding hairline. In men, receding hair around the forehead and temples often accompanies a general thinning of the hair. Women with thinning hair may see thinner, downy hair with less definition around the hairline.
-
Step 4
Look for thinning on top of your head. The top of the head is the most common spot for women to experience thinning hair, and it is one of the two most common spots for men. If you see a big difference between the density of hair on top of your head and in other places, you are probably losing hair.
-
Step 5
Notice any increase in the number of hairs you lose on a daily basis. If you are finding more hairs in your brush or if the tub is frequently clogged with hair, it may be a sign that your hair is thinning.
