No matter how wonderful our computers are, at some point they begin to not function as efficiently as they did when we first got them. If the problems we are experiencing with our computers are related to the operating system, there is a way to start fresh. Reinstalling Windows XP using an installation disk is simple and gives us a chance to begin again and extend the life of our computer.

  • Blank CDs for backing up data
  • Windows XP installation disc (came with your computer)
  • Product key

Instructions

      Copy all of the data and media files that you want to save on to a CD. Files will be erased when you reinstall Windows XP.

      Turn off your computer, and turn it back on.

      Insert the Windows XP installation disk into the disk drive while the computer is booting up.

      Click "Install Windows XP" when the "Welcome to Windows XP" page loads on your screen.

      Select "New Install" from your installation type choices when the "Welcome to Windows XP Setup" page loads. Click "Next."

      Click "I Accept" on the License Agreement Page.

      Examples of product key labels

      Type in your 25-digit product key on the "Product Key Page." This will be on the packaging of your disk, and sometimes on the housing of your computer.

      Follow the prompts to continue with Windows XP setup. These are pages that will ask for your time zones and other information. During this process your computer will shut down and restart a few times. Do not intere with its restart and do not press any keys while it is restarting.

      Click "Finish" when the screen prompt tells you that you are done installing Windows XP.

      Reinstall your anti-virus software before connecting to the Internet.

      Go to Windows Update and look for updates to your installed product.

  • Always back up important data and photos before doing a Windows XP reinstall.

  • Be aware that you may lose other programs that were installed on your computer, and you will need to reinstall them as well.
