How to Fix a Tear in a Pool Liner
Swimming pools are a wonderful way to enjoy family fun during hot summer days. They are normally constructed from concrete (gunite), fiberglass or vinyl. Vinyl pools are generally the most cost-effective choice, but they are also less durable than other options and are prone to tears and holes. There are two ways to patch a hole in a pool liner. The easiest and most effective method is while the pool is still filled with water. After just a few simple steps, you'll be back to enjoying your swimming pool in no time at all. Instructions

1
Locate the tear in the liner.
-
2
Wipe the area around the tear with a rag to remove any debris.
-
-
3
Read all instructions on the patching kit before applying the patch to the liner surface (see Resources below).
-
4
Cut a round patch using the vinyl that comes with the repair kit. The patch should be at least 2 inches in diameter.
-
5
Apply patching adhesive to the back of the vinyl material using the applicator brush. Do not apply too much adhesive or the patch will not adhere properly.
-
6
Fold the patch in half so that the adhesive is on the inside of the fold.
-
7
Enter the pool water if you cannot reach the tear from the outside of the pool.
-
8
Unfold the patch under the water just before applying it to the tear.
-
9
Firmly press the patch in place over the tear. Smooth the surface from the center of the patch to the outside edges to remove any bubbles or water trapped under the surface.
-
10
Allow the patch to cure according to kit recommendations.

Tips & Warnings
A patch kit should include vinyl patching material, adhesive gel and adhesive applicator. Patch kits can be purchased at your local hardware store, a pool supply store or online retailers (see Resources below). Be sure to round the corners of the patch. If they are square, there is a greater chance that it will peel away from the liner surface. Use swimming goggles so that you have a clearer view of the area that needs patching. If this method does not work, you will need to drain your pool and reapply the patch to the tear.
Hold the patch firmly when smoothing it to the liner. If it slides around, it will not adhere correctly.
