Before you head off on that overnight camping trip, check your air mattresses for leaks. Do not assume that, merely because they were fine at the end of the season, they are still in working order. Leaks often occur while the mattress is stored for the winter, and you do not want to discover this the hard way by waking up on the ground. Fortunately, finding leaks is relatively easy (although patching them may be a challenge).

From Quick Guide: Air Mattress Basics
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Spray bottle Dish detergent Tub/pool
  1. Step 1

Inflate the air mattress to the recommended capacity. If you have a mattress with an attached pump, use it. Otherwise, blow up the mattress by mouth. Using an air compressor can easily over-inflate the mattress, causing it to burst.

  2. Step 2

Check all seals and plugs to make sure they are secure. If your pump is attached, be sure to check the connectors, as these are the areas most likely to produce air leaks.

  3. Step 3

Examine the mattress visually, paying close attention to seams. Once the mattress is inflated, even a pinhole may be visible as the air causes it to expand.

  4. Step 4

Run your hand over the mattress to feel for a stream of air. Small holes may not be detected, but you can often find holes simply by feeling for them.

  5. Step 5

Listen for any escaping air by placing your ear close to the mattress and applying pressure to the force air out of the leaks. A hissing sound indicates an air leak.

  6. Step 6

Fill a spray bottle with water and a little dish detergent. Spray the seams and watch for air bubbles. You can apply the soap and water with a damp cloth, if you prefer. Work you way around the perimeter of the mattress, being sure to check all seams.

  7. Step 7

Insert the mattress in a tub of water. You may need to do this a section at a time, unless you have pool or nearby lake in which to submerge the entire mattress. Watch for tiny bubbles formed by escaping air.

  8. Step 8

Dry the mattress and follow the manufacturer's recommendations for patching.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always mark the leak with a pen or marker. It is easy to forget exactly where the leak was located once you dry the mattress.
