How to Make Ribbon for a Tutu

If you have joined the many mothers who have made a homemade tutu for a little budding ballerina--or perhaps you own a pretty little tutu that you bought ready-made--here is a neat idea for embellishing a tutu and making it even more pretty.

With a few lengths of simple ribbon, you can add ribbon streamers to a little dancer's tutu and make it even more special. Learn a few simple instructions for embellishing a tutu with ribbon.

Things You'll Need:

• 1/8-inch-wide satin ribbon (color of your choice) Scissors Tape measure

1. Measure the existing tutu from the waistband to the end of the tulle.

2. Multiply this measurement by two.

3. Cut 8 to 10 lengths of ribbon to this measurement.

4. Add the ribbon to the waistband of the tutu as follows. Fold one length of ribbon in half. Take the folded end of the ribbon and place it under the waistband of the tutu with the looped ribbon sticking out above the waistband approximately 2 inches. The tails of the ribbon will extend out underneath the tutu. Grasp the tails of the ribbon; pull them up and insert them through the loop of ribbon and pull tight to attach the length of ribbon to the waistband of the tutu.

5. Repeat Step 4 with all of the lengths of ribbon. Space them out evenly around the entire circle of the tutu waistband.

6. Trim the ribbons to make them even, if necessary, to finish the ribbon embellishments on the tutu.
