How to Build a Car Dolly

Car dollies are indispensable tools in a shop where a vehicle might remain incapable of running for a period of time and might need to be moved. Using a set of four dollies, one man can move a car without help.

  • 1.5-inch x 1.5-inch x 1/4-inch angle iron 1.5-inch pipe Heavy-duty caster wheels 4x4 1/4-inch-flat steel stock

Instructions

    • 1

      Cut two 18-inch-long pieces of 1.5-inch x 1.5-inch x 1/4-inch angle iron.

      Cut two 16-inch-long pieces of 1.5-inch pipe.

    • 3

      Assemble the frame of the dolly by welding the angle iron pieces on each end of the two pipes.

      Weld the flat steel 4-inch x 4-inch x 1/4-inch plates to the bottom of each corner of the frame.

      Weld the swiveling caster mounting flange to the steel plates at the corners of the frame.

      Paint the dolly a color of your choice.

      Make a set of four to move a vehicle easily. To use simply jack up the car, placing a dolly under each tire. Let the car down off the jack and the tire will be cradled in the dolly.
