The easiest way to move photos from any digital camera is to connect it with your computer. Cameras from Olympus ship with a USB cable, which allows the camera to be tethered to the PC for downloading photos from the on-board memory card. Using the cable prevents damage or misplacement of the memory card. Olympus digital cameras use two different USB cables, each compatible with a different series of camera. The cables are defined by the size of the lead that plugs into the camera.

Things You'll Need:

  • An Olympus brand digital camera The accompanying USB cable A computer with an open USB port
  1. Step 1

Find the USB port on the camera. The ports are usually located on the same side of the camera as the photo capture button. On the shorter, vertical side of the camera is a door that, when opened, will reveal the USB port.

  2. Step 2

Plug the USB cable into the camera. The USB cable has two distinctly different size plugs. One is larger than the other and is flat and narrow. This is the lead for the computer port. The smaller, rectangular plug goes into the camera.

  3. Step 3

Connect the USB cable to the PC. When it comes to USB port placement, each computer is different. Older tower PCs concentrate their ports in the rear of the machine, but most newer computers usually have 2 to 4 ports on the front. Laptops are built with USB ports on both the side and back.

  4. Step 4

Wait for the computer to recognize the camera. Both Macintosh and Windows-based computers will automatically recognize the camera by launching the assigned photo management software. Download the photos to the computer.

  5. Step 5

Disconnect the camera and cable. To safely end the session with the camera on a Mac, simply drag the memory card--located on the desktop--to the Trash. In Windows, go to the system tray--located next to the clock--and right-click on the Connected Device manager (this looks like a green plug). A pop-up menu will appear. Click "Safely Remove Hardware." Your camera can now be disconnected.
