How to Make Macrame Keychains

Macrame and knot tying are popular crafts. The assortment of things you can make with some string, simple knots and beads is quite impressive.
Here is beginner's macrame project for making a keychain. It's also suitable for a child, with some adult supervision to make sure she does the knotting correctly.

Things You'll Need

• 6 yards hemp 3 beads 1 key ring Tape measure Scissors Masking tape

Instructions

1. Cut the length of hemp in half.

2. 

   Fold each hemp piece in half and attach both to the key ring by placing the folded end through the ring. Grasp the ends of the hemp and pull them through the loop in the hemp. (See illustration.)

3. Fasten the ring to your work surface with the masking tape.

4. 

   Following the illustration, make a square knot by crossing the pink piece over the yellow and green pieces and under the blue piece. (Colors are for illustration purposes only; choose whatever colors of hemp you like.)

5. 

   Take the blue piece under the green and yellow pieces, and then through the loop created by the pink piece. Tighten.

6. 

   Pass the pink piece over the yellow and green pieces, and back under the blue piece.

7. 

   Take the blue piece under the yellow and green pieces, and through the loop of pink. Make the square knot tight.

8. Tie four more square knots.

9. Place a bead on the two middle pieces of hemp, and push it up snugly to the knotting.

10. Tie a tight square knot under the bead.

11. Add another bead. Push it up snugly to the knotting, and tie another tight square knot.

12. Repeat with one more bead. Tie three square knots. Make sure all your knots and beads are very snug.

13. Tie all four cords together in an overhand knot at the bottom of the keychain. Trim any excess hemp.
