How to Install an Oven Heating Element

The oven heating element is the square wire the glows red to heat the oven. When the oven no longer heats, it might be the oven heating element. If you got a new oven heating element and need to install it, it's not very difficult. When you took the old element out, you should have labeled the wires that attach to it. First, it guarantees that the wires won't mysterious sink behind the yellow insulation and secondly it makes sure that you attach the appropriate wire to each terminal. There are two styles of connections for oven heating elements.

Screw in Terminals

1. Lift off the oven door so you have more space to work. You open the door to the position you leave it in to broil and lift straight up. If you have a self cleaning oven, unscrew the hinges.

2. Remove the wire shelves.

3. Attach the terminals. When you removed the element, you probably marked the wires. If you didn't, it still shouldn't be a problem since they tend to remain in position. Attach the terminals of the element to the wire connectors and screw them down.

4. Push the back bracket to the wall flush and replace the screws.

5. Put the front support bracket back on the heating element if there is one.

6. Clip the capillary tube back into the holder if you had to remove it to pull the broiler oven heating element.

7. Slide the oven door back into place. Screw on the hinges if it's a self-cleaning oven.

Pull Out Terminals

1. Remove the oven door so you have more space to work. In order to do this, open the door to the "Broil" position and lift it straight up. If you have a self-cleaning oven, you'll need to unscrew the hinges.

2. Take out all the wire racks.

3. Know that your oven heating element plugs into a socket. Older ovens normally have an element that plugs into a socket rather than connects by wire. You can tell this type of element because there's not plate with screws.

4. Line up the element to the opening.

5. Insert the element into the opening and push the feet into the slots as you would a plug into the outlet. It's easy to install this oven heating element.
