Recone Speakers

Everyone at one time or another experiences a blown speaker in their stereo system. A blown speaker typically occurs when your speaker cone tears, rips, or gets a hole in it. This creates a distorted rattling or muddy type of sound in the speaker. The best solution to a blown speaker is to simply change out the old damaged speaker cones with a new set of cones.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a speaker recone kit. These kits come with all of the pieces you need, including cones and new gaskets. You can find these kits at online speaker stores and dealers, or you can visit an electronics store.

    • 2

Take apart the speaker that has the damaged cone. Use a utility knife to cut around the cone and then gently pull it off the speaker.

    • 3

Take the blade of your knife and place it between the old gasket and the speaker. Pry the old gasket out and discard it.

    • 4

Use some glue cleaner to remove any excess glue left on the speaker frame. Use a soft cloth to wipe away the solvent and extra glue.

    • 5

Cut a two-inch wide piece from a small index card. Use this piece as a shim: place it in the gap of the voice coil. Get some masking place and tape the shim in the gap.

    • 6

Run a bead of glue all along the frame of the speaker. Slide the new cone into the frame. Allow the cone to dry over night.

    • 7

Remove the shim and replace the gasket. Solder the speaker wires to the correct terminals.

    • 8

Put the speaker back together and check to make sure it works properly.
